How to Tell Which Type of Lightbulb is Best

Buying a lightbulb for a certain light fixture or sign may sound simple and straightforward but what many people quickly find out is that it is not.  There are a myriad of light bulb options on the market today from from which to choose.  And, not only that, it is important to choose the right bulb for each room and unique light fixture to ensure that you do not short a circuit, create a dangerous light fixture, or drain the lightbulb too quickly.

First, it is important to talk about how to know what specific type of lightbulb is needed for a light fixture or sign.  If you are replacing a light bulb, one of the easiest ways to tell is to simply look at the previous type of light bulb and buy the same kind.  There are different kinds of screws including bayonet, screw and other. If it is a new light fixture or sign the owners manual may shed some light on which is the best bulb or the fixture itself may say which type of bulb to use.

Next, you will need to choose the features of the lightbulb that will be best suited to your lighting needs.  The common types of light bulbs include LED, Incandescent, Halogen, and CFL (Compact Fluorescent Bulbs).  You are probably familiar with incandescent bulbs already, even if you didn’t know it, because they have been the most common type of light bulb for the last few decades but that is now shifting.  LED lights are more expensive than incandescent lights but they will last decades without needing to be replaced.

Additionally, you will need to consider brightness and color.  Choosing what level of brightness and color is needed will depend heavily on the space.  For example, do you intend to perform tasks or read near a lamp?  Is the lighting designed to be ambient lighting for a space?  Or, are you using the lighting as a accent to draw attention to a specific area?  If you have questions regarding which type of lightbulb is best for your unique application or needs, contact an experienced and knowledgeable lighting installer to get advice so that you choose a light that will provide the light you need and maximize the return on your investment.
